First of all, this SanDisk 2TB portable SSD was not one of the ones subject to recall. The manufacturer has a website where one can check the S/N against those affected.
Second, since I use it on Mac and Linux computers I immediately reformatted it after plugging it in. Reformat took little time and was not problematic at all.
Third, the SanDisk 2TB portable SSD was quick and easy to set it to download all my files and run in the background even though the USB on the older computer was not fast. Then on the other computer I uploaded my files using an USB 3.2 port and transfer went very fast, also in the background while I did other things.
Fourth, write lifespan of an SSD depends more on the number of write cycles (into the millions) rather than how many times a hard disk spins on its bearings. So the SSD can just sit there plugged in and not degrade.
